Les sélections vont de Symphony in black de 1934 (dont le début est tronqué) à des extraits de concerts période Louie Belson ou Sam Woodyard, en passant par des soundies des années 40. Tout ceci est très intéressant, mais un peu plus de rigueur dans la présentation de ce Dvd aurait été bienvenue. |

Billie Holyday fait son apparition dans Symphony in black (1934). Paramount Pictorial (Duke Ellington makes a record) nous fait découvrir le cheminement d’une composition, de l’orchestre en studio jusqu'à la fabrication du 78 tours. Mi-documentaire mi-concert. Commençons par le mauvais côté des choses : le film est de très mauvaise qualité, certains plans sont abominables (esthétique des années soixante, qui a très mal vieilli) et les images souvent floues. Mais comme il vaut mieux ce mauvais document que rien du tout passons au contenu : The opener sert de fond sonore à une vision carte postale de Juan-les-Pins. Dans la partie documentaire, Ellington nous parle d'art, de Picasso, Giacometti, Miro. Duke en compagnie de Miro, admire les œuvres de celui-ci. Miro en compagnie du Duke, l'écoute jouer en privé, au beau milieu d'un musée d'art moderne (deux pièces en trio : Kinda dukish et The Shepherd). Le moment le plus passionnant du concert est sans hésitation La plus belle africaine où l'on peut apprécier John Lamb (à l'archet), Harry Carney (longue improvisation), Sam Woodyard (frappant ses toms avec les mains) et Jimmy Hamilton (un court instant). Johnny Hodges intervient sur The old circus train turn-around blues. Things ain't what they used to be se fait entendre brièvement alors que défile le générique de fin. Ce film nous laisse un peu sur notre faim, nous en aurions voulu d'avantage, et mieux restauré. |
